The Amazing Journey of the Kangas Teams to Championship Glory
A Tale of Tenacity and Cooperation
Written by Mark Giles | Edited by Sigmund Pereira
The Kangas Basketball Club has long been known for its community spirit, teamwork, and determination — and over the past two years, those values have shone brighter than ever. I’ve had the honour of coaching three outstanding teams — our Under-21s, Under-18A, and Under-16B — across four seasons, and I couldn’t be prouder of what these young athletes have accomplished. These players have shown what true tenacity and teamwork can achieve. Their accomplishments are a testament to their diligence, dedication, and sacrifice — qualities that have not only brought them success on the court but also strengthened the spirit of the Kangas community. Across the past four seasons, these three teams have advanced to an incredible ten grand finals, winning eight of them. Despite comparatively being under-represented in the WABL rankings, the Kangas have proven that hard work and unity can overcome any challenge. This season, all three Kanga teams reached the finals — and remarkably, all three came away with Grand Final victories. It was a beautiful trifecta of triumph. What makes this achievement even more special is that two of those teams entered the grand finals as underdogs, defying expectations through sheer will, effort, and trust in each other. The teamwork and determination these players have displayed highlight the importance of cooperation and selflessness in basketball. Our players have learned that playing for the team always comes first — and that trust, encouragement, and a collective work ethic can outshine individual talent.
The Under-18A Team: A Fairytale of Growth and Grit
While every team’s success has been extraordinary, one group deserves particular recognition — our Under-18A Division squad. Just three years ago, this team sat mid-ladder in the Under-16B division. But even then, the players made a commitment: to never give up and to work toward becoming champions of their age group. Their journey since has been nothing short of inspiring. Two years ago, the Under-16B team fulfilled their promise, winning the grand final and
earning promotion to the tougher Under-18A Division. The following season brought fresh challenges. Although they missed the finals that year, they refused to be discouraged. They stayed focused, determined to keep improving. Last season, they returned to the finals and fought hard in the Grand Final— but heartbreak struck when they lost in the final 30 seconds. Yet rather than letting that loss define them, they used it as fuel. This year, their story came full circle. The team went undefeated through the season and dominated the grand final, winning by an impressive 35 points. It was a fairytale ending that showcased their resilience, commitment, and belief in each other. As they prepare to step up to the Men’s A Division next season, their story stands as a shining example of growth, perseverance, and unity.
A Bond Beyond Basketball
Over the past few seasons, I’ve had the pleasure of taking this group to Dandenong twice (the World’s biggest International Junior Basketball Tournament), where we reached the finals both times — an achievement in itself. But what stands out most isn’t just the trophies or wins. It’s the loyalty, camaraderie, and continuous drive for improvement that these players have shown. They’ve stuck together through the highs and lows, pushing one another to stay committed to their shared goals. They’re a lively, hardworking group of athletes who have embodied what it means to wear the Kangas colours. Their success isn’t just measured by grand final victories — it’s seen in the teamwork, the growth, and the lessons they’ve learned along the way. Watching them mature into confident, skilled, and humble young men has been one of the great joys of my coaching journey.
Looking Ahead
The Kangas Basketball Club’s recent success reflects more than just results on the scoreboard — it’s a story of belief, hard work, and unity. These young athletes have proven that when you commit to one another and play as a team, anything is possible. I couldn’t be prouder of everything they’ve achieved. It’s been an amazing journey, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for these talented young players as they take their next steps — both on and off the court.
